The good times for those extracting metal ores

In the wide array of Polish mining the companies extracting non-errous ores are not, by any means, a little visible shred. On the contrary. They prosper well and there is a perspective of many years of further operation ahead of them.
KGHM Polska Miedź SA is a company the shares of which are highly noted on the Stock Exchange. In 2007 it mined 30.262 Thos. tons of copper ore and produced a record quantity of electrolytic - copper - almost 533 Thos. tons and metal silver - 1 215 tons. Last year the company also won 883 kg of metal gold, 21 Thos. tons of raw lead, 15 Thos. tons of refined lead, more than 650 Thos. tons of sulfuric acid, almost 7 Thos. tons of copper sulfate, 2.1 Thos. tons of nickel sulfate and more than 85 tons of technical selenium.

In the first quarter of the current year the financial results of KGHM Polska Miedź were higher than those planned. The revenues on sales exceeded the amount of over 3 bln PLN, and net profit was 982 million PLN. In the world rankings the company is ranked ninth refined copper producers and third among producers of silver. The Company employs 18 Thos. people and the whole Capital Group more than 28 Thos. people. It has shares in 21 subjects acting in different production - service rendering areas.

Three pillars

At present the production pillars of Polish Copper are the three mining plants: „Lubin”, „Rudna”, „Polkowice-Sierszowice” and Ores Preparation Plant preparing the concentrates for foundries as well as the Hydro-technical Plant the task of which consists in storing and management of wastes generated in the production process. In June this year the shaft sinking operations started at SW - shaft in Łagoszów Mały near Głogów. It will be the 30th in the Copper Basin and similarly as in the case of previous ones it will be sunk by Mines Construction Company - PeBeKa.

KGHM Polska Miedź invests a lot both in improvement the machinery park as well as in preparation for development and opening-up of new deposit referred to as „Głogów Głęboki - „Przemysłowy”. It is natural prolongation and continuation of the currently exploited deposits in „Rudna” and „Sieroszowice” mines. It will assure the perspective of continuing of extraction till 2035. Those reserves constitute 26 per cent of the currently exploited ones. For mining supervision it is essential that those production intentions are reconciled with the provision of work safety for the crew. Going down with the exploitation below a thousand meters is associated with climatic and seismic hazards. This has been the taken into account in programs of the company and is being realized with the assistance of the scientists - notices Mirosław Kaziura, the vice-Chairman of Higher Mining Authority.

„Bolesław” thinks about a new deposit

The exploitation of zinc - lead ores and the production of zinc are the main areas of activity of Mining - Metallurgical Plants „Bolesław” SA in Bukowno. Since 2006, when the prices of raw minerals (copper, aluminum, but also zinc and lead) soared and the sun started to shine for the company, it has a license for exploitation of depleting reserves at „Pomorzany” mine till 2013 but it also makes endeavors to prolong the license till the commencement of a new mining plant in the region of Zawiercie.

Last year the revenues of ZGH „Bolesław” SA amounted to 785 million PLN and net profit to 233 million PLN. The company is meant for privatization. The government has not taken a final decision yet on the form of the company\'s privatization: listing it on stock exchange or sale to a strategic investor. In 2007 the company produced 75 Thos. tons of zinc. The strategic plans of the company envisage the commencement of processing of zinc. The construction of a new plant is considered for production of zinc white. That would be an investment estimated for about 50 million PLN.
