Polish coal in the European Union
Polish production of hard coal constitutes over 50% of the union’s production. However, in case of power coal it is about 59%, whereas coking coal about 39%. Poland is the second, after Germany, producer of coking coal in the EU.
The only country producers of hard coal in the European Union are: the Czech Republic (annual production of about 14 million tons), Spain (about 13 million tons), Germany (about 29 million tons), Poland (about 100 million tons in 2003, about 99 million tons in 2004, about 97.1 million tons in 2005, and about 94.3 million tons in 2006), and Great Britain (about 28 million tons).
Poland is the biggest producer of hard coal in the European Union. In 2006 15.8 million tons of coal were sold within the European Union, as well as beyond the EU countries. Nevertheless, the amount of the coal exported or taken away was 16.9 million tons (the difference resulting from the fact the coal was sold from the stocks of Węglokoks SA which previously bought it from mining companies).
Poland delivers about 16 million tons of hard coal to the union marekt annually. Power coal is sold in majority, and it constitutes about 86% of all Polish coal taken away on the union markets.
