Employment in mining
At the end of 2006 the employment in mining was 119.3 thousand people.
As the result of hard coal mining employment restructuring, the employment in mines has significantly decreased, especially among people working underground who constituted 77% of all the employed at the end of 2006 (91.7 thounsand people – on 31.12.2006). During the last nine years alone the employment decreased – altogether 124,000 people.
The restructuring of employment has also caused change in the structure of employees’ age and period of service, resulting in aging of mine workers. At the end of 2006 68% of people hired to work underground had work experience from 16 to 25 years. Due to present retirement regulations all those people will gain the right to retire until 2015. A similar effect will occur in the group of coal mechanical processing workers.
